Meet Barbara L. Sharp
I paint stories shaped by my career as a radiologist in Tanzania and Florida. After retiring from medicine in 2016, I devoted myself more deeply to painting while continuing to volunteer in healthcare, including at a hospital in Tanzania that I continue to return to. My MFA studies at the New York Academy of Art offered a chance to reflect on these experiences and how they continue to inform my work.
The people I met in Tanzania are among my greatest inspirations. Their resilience and ability to hold onto beauty, even within systems that have failed them, is a strength I carry with me. My paintings honor the moments when our lives intersected, and the quiet humanity shared in those encounters.
These experiences also broadened my understanding of the systemic inequities present in the United States. Through my art, I hope to bring awareness to these issues by focusing on the connections that unite us. I believe in the power of empathy, and in our collective ability, to create meaningful change.
I continue to make work utilizing oil paint and homemade stamps. My paintings can be found in a variety of galleries in New York City.
